Telcel and Movistar join forces vs. mobile phone thefts

The companies will sign today an agreement to exchange information so as to avoid the reuse of stolen cell phones

Telcel, subsidiary of America Movil, and Telefónica Movistar will sign today an agreement to exchange information so as to avoid the reuse of stolen cell phones. In the event of today’s afternoon will be Luis Wertman Zaslav, president of Public Security Board of the Federal District.

According to some statistics of the organism, they have reported a total of 263,000 stolen cell phones throughout 26 months, from which they have done telephone blackmails and that could be cancelled through the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI).

According to GSM Association, this code (IMEI) is a number that identifies an individual mobile station, which is a mechanism that controls access to GSM networks and consists of a 15-digit number that goes from 0 to 9 in binary-coded decimal.

Until the fourth quarter 2009, Telefónica Movistar sum a total of 17.7 million subscribers in Mexico, divided into 17.4 million mobile subscribers with a market quote of 21%, and 334,000 million fixed subscribers with a participation in GTM.

On the contrary, Telcel registered 59.2 million subscribers at the end of the fourth quarter 2009 with a stockholding of 72% in mobile phone market. (El Semanario Agencia, ESA)
