Salinas Pliego requests drug legalization in Mexico

The second richest man in Mexico suggested the legalization of drugs as a solution to war against drug cartels due to a worsening of violence related to illegal drug trade

Ricardo Salinas Pliego, the second richest man in Mexico suggested the legalization of drugs as a solution to war against drug cartels due to a worsening of violence related to illegal drug trade.

“Weapons are legal in this side of the frontier”, stated the owner of TV Azteca with reference to United States. “Why don’t we legalize drugs in Mexico?, asked in his participation at Financial Journalist and Editors SABEW conference in United States.

From Phoenix, Arizona, the Mexican billionaire assured we are losing the war against drugs and in order to take advantage of this situation “drugs must be legalized or delivered to consumers in a controlled way”.

According to the Spanish journal El Mundo, Salinas Pliego stated he set out this issue to former Mexican president Vicente Fox, and to current leader Felipe Calderón, who rejected it for the fear to upset United States.

The Mexican businessman expressed that United States is also the responsible of the security crisis in Mexico, because “the money (to buy cocaine) and the weapons come from the North”. (El Semanario Agencia, ESA)
