Prosecutors in the southern Mexico state of Oaxaca said they have arrested five suspects in the killing of a Canadian woman and a Mexican man whose bodies were found partly buried on a beach in December.

Prosecutors said Monday that members of the violent Zetas cartel robbed and killed Mexican-born Canadian citizen Ximena Osegueda and a friend, Alejandro Honorio Santamaria.

The two were on a beach near the resort of Huatulco when members of the Zetas allegedly attacked them, tied them up, slit their throats and stole their possessions.

A statement released by prosecutors said that three other men who allegedly participated in the slayings are still at large but are being sought by police.

Three of the suspects already arrested are women; they face charges of homicide and robbery. Some of the other suspects also face organized crime counts.

Local media in Canada identified Osegueda as a University of British Columbia student.

The car the couple was using was found in Oaxaca City, 410 kilometres north of Huatulco.

Inside the car investigators found a sales receipt from a butcher shop that had a security camera, using those and other photos and videos from ATMs, police homed in on the suspects, who had allegedly used the victims’ credit cards to get cash and make purchases.

The gang has been linked to other crimes, including at least three murders, the prosecutors’ office said.
