Mexico City - A candidate for governor in the north-eastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas was assassinated Monday less than one week before elections, Mexican television reported.

Rodolfo Torre Cantu, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) candidate, was killed in an ambush on a road near the airport in the city of Victoria. Four others were also killed in the attack, the report said.

Regional elections are to be held Sunday.

The motive for the attack was unclear, but Mexico has been plagued by years of drug violence that have left thousands dead.
