Ricardo Salinas Pliego might merge operations of his companies Iusacell and TV Azteca to compete with Televisa and Nextel
The possible commercial alliance between Televisa and Nextel might cause some changes in market television and mobile telephony market. The first could be given by the merger between Televisa and TV Azteca.
Ricardo Salinas Pliego, owner of Iusacell and TV Azteca arise the possibility of merging these two companies to compete with Grupo Televisa, who is almost entering the wireless market through the agreement signed with Nextel.
TV Azteca´s soap operas and soccer broadcastings may attract Iusacell customers, said Salinas in an interview with American agency Bloomberg.
The merger of Iusacell with TV Azteca "is a good idea" assured Salinas.
The second richest man in Mexico recognized "they have done a bad managing job" with Iusacell and have let go their opportunities,and that this situation was definitely self-inflicted.
Iusacell had a debt of 930 million dollars at the end of 2009; the company is still negotiating with creditors after suspending payments a year ago on United States denominated debt.
TELEVISA-NEXTEL
Last february 15, Grupo Televisa signed a definitive agreement with NII Holdings for the acquisition of a shareholder participation in Nextel Mexico. For this acquisition, Televisa will invest 1,440 billion dollars in cash, which is equivalent to a participation of 30% in Nextel’s capital.
The alliance between Grupo Televisa and Mexico will mainly focus in Mexican market where they will seek a participation in spectrum trends of 1.7 and 1.9 GHz bands, whose main purpose is offering 3G services in the country. The investment of Grupo Televisa on Nextel is subject to the obtaining of spectrum and that Nextel has enough so as to extend its services.
The services that actually have each one of the companies will allow offering quadruple-play services, which include: fixed and mobile telephony, satellite and cable TV, and fixed and mobile Internet services, although they cleared up that are still working in commercial agreements to offer products of both companies.
