Is his government over? Calderon need new strategy

Regarding the pending reforms, the presidency might leave a sweet and sour taste, because for one side he would show off the approved bills

The time for president Calderon to do significant changes is running down, because after several setbacks very few chances are left for the president. This might take him to integrate a new political strategy that includes leadership and political agreements in the country’s benefit.

Marco Herrera, political analysts explain in an intervene with El Semanario, that since the electoral defeat of the National Action Party (Partido Accion Nacional PAN), on 2008, which gave the Institutional Revolution Party (Partido Revolucionario Institutional) majority in the congress, Calderon’s presidency was reduced and he lost control upon the political operation.

He said that in that from the three years left to Calderon on December he will actually have only one year and 8 months more as a president due to three facts; The defeat in the legislative elections on 2009, the electoral campaign was for 2012 has been moved forward and the elections to be held in Estado de Mexico to choose governor.

The specialist said, that added to the above there is the risk that PRI would win on at least 10 of the 12 governments disputed this year and the struggle held in PAN between the president and the ultra right wing section it is obvious that the maneuver margin for the president has become very small.

"This presidency is hostage of all politic groups and it has very short space left to maneuver” he emphasized.
Regarding the pending legislation reforms, Mr. Herrera said that this might leave a sweet and sour taste because on one side PAN could show off in case the bills are approved, but in the other side PRI might announce them as their own and use them in its favor on the elections of 2011 and 2012.

Likewise, he considered that PRI will not retaliate against Calderon for the alliances made against it, instead it will push for changes that will benefit the party and allow a wider range of action in case of returning to Los Pinos on 2012.

Finally he added that this “affects the citizens because they keep putting patches in the rules that govern our country and supposing that PRI wins on 2012, it will be when a long term reform will be actually negotiated, Meanwhile does patches will not lead Mexico to a good development neither will they place the country in a competitive level in the international sphere”.
